crochet + enlightenment

i've run into a story about 5 times in the last month. it's the one about a woman attending a lecture by Ram Dass who keeps nodding in agreement at all of his comments. at the end, he asks her how she knows so much about all these "far out" things he's discussing. and she responds (usually told as, "whispers conspiratorally"), "i crochet".

the story usually is repeated as "a little old lady with a hat that has cherries bobbling on it". but i just can't make myself repeat stuff like that, for, i hope, obvious reasons.

i just had to find out whether there was any truth to this story, so i called Ram Dass's secretary, M... she actually researched the question before she called me back to say that, yes, it's one of his favorite stories and has been captured on tape in at least two instances. the researcher in me is satisfied.
